About the Anchorage Regional Firefighter Challenge
On July 4, 2015 a Firefighter Combat Challenge regional event will be held in Anchorage. The 42 foot high Challenge tower will be set up adjacent to the Anchorage Delany Park Strip with a full slate of events in association with the Fairs and Festival’s 4th of July Parade, Festival, and Centennial celebration. In addition to the Firefighters events, we will also host The Mayor’s Centennial Cup Firefighter Combat Challenge Relay (open to all athletes). Proceeds from these events go the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Seen on ESPN for a dozen years, The Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge annually attracts hundreds of U.S. and Canadian fire departments to 25 regional events and is now expanding to countries around the world, including New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. The Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession’s rigors to the public. Wearing “full bunker gear” and breathing apparatus, pairs of competitors race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. “victim” as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock. Spectator admission is FREE. Register at http://www.firefighter-challenge.com/
The Mayor’s Centennial Cup Firefighter Combat Challenge Relay (open to any organization, family, military, and all other athletes) is an opportunity for both competitive and casual athletes to take on the Firefighter Combat Challenge course. “Just for fun” teams are composed of three to five members. Competitive teams are composed of 3 to 5 members with at least one female and no firefighters. Teams may register by calling Carol with the Anchorage Firefighters at 907-349-1264 and paying a $99 per team participation fee. Team members under 18 years old must have a parent sign a release. Rules may be found at http://www.firefighter-challenge.com/ click “challenge” then click “rules”.
The Kid’s Fire Fighter Combat Challenge will be set up on the Park Strip at 9th and H after the 4th of July Parade. The Kid’s Firefighter Challenge outfits each child is with a helmet and “turn-out gear.” The events mirror those used in the Firefighter Combat Challenge. In order, each child carries a shoulder load of hose, climbs to the top of a 12-foot inflatable tower, slides to the bottom, where they “stop, drop and roll.” They then crawl through the tunnel, work the miniature Keiser Force Machine with the supplied mallet, advance a 1″ fire line with authentic nozzle striking a target and finally “make the rescue” with an appropriately sized mannequin. Designed for children ages 4 to 11 the Kid’s Firefighter Challenge is FREE, but we will be accepting charitable donations at the event for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
